Foreign Travel Health Tips

With just 36 hours to circle the world by air, a time well below the incubation period of most diseases can be contracted in many countries around the world. Year after year, more and more people who undertake international travel, even in developing countries that were just beaten goals: reducing the cost of flights were offered to many, the opportunity to visit distant countries, often for the first time.

The more than 700 million passengers who travel each year on the planet have a significant risk of getting sick and becoming a vehicle of infection to other people when they get back home. Every traveler should be aware that protect your health also means protecting those of others and that to do so we must also respect the culture and environment of the destination of travel.

In recent years, health authorities around the world have understood the importance of protecting human health from possible outbreaks of infection or precarious sanitary situation of the countries visited. On the one hand, the risk can be minimized through appropriate precautions, prevention and vaccination, taken prior to departure. Secondly, the identification and timely treatment of an imported disease are essential for preventing the disease from transmitting to others, to become a serious public health problem.

Before you travel

To reduce the risk of getting sick or having accidents while you are abroad, the ideal is to contact your doctor 4-6 weeks before you leave. Among the general factors to consider are:

1. Pre-existing diseases or disorders
2. Vaccination status (including the possibility of vaccines against diseases endemic in the destination of travel)
3. Allergies to foods or medicines
4. Prescriptions being
5. Any previous trips.

Depending on the destination of the journey, we must then consider all those who may become risk factors:

* Food and water, are often not thoroughly purified in many countries around the world
* Environmental conditions to which the body is not accustomed (altitude, drought, temperature too high)
* Presence of parasites in the environment and in animals with whom you may come into contact (by insects in various invertebrates, until poultry)
* Sexual behaviors that may increase the risk of transmitting infections.

The characteristics of the journey and the destination are important: a roadmap, place and length of stay, conditions of hygiene, and reason for travel (tourism, business, educational, humanitarian mission, etc.), season of the year, possible exposure to risk factors, epidemic in progress.

There are some categories of especially vulnerable people who require more care during the sight: children, elderly, pregnant women and immunocompromised individuals, but also people who are preparing to make a trip “adventure.”

Prophylaxis and vaccination

Vaccination can be an effective preventive of many diseases that can be contracted during travel. When you are about to leave, you should first check to be up to date with vaccinations under the national program. In particular, in Italy are compulsory immunization against diphtheria and tetanus (DT), polio (IPV) and hepatitis B (Hb), while those are strongly recommended to protect from measles, mumps and rubella (MPR) and infections with Haemophilus influenzae b (Hib).

Depending on the destination then the journey will be recommended the vaccine or prophylaxis against certain specific diseases. Today, no country requires the certificate of vaccination against smallpox and against cholera. The only certificate that should be required in international travel, up to some travelers, is that against yellow fever. Many countries require an international certificate of vaccination valuable to travelers arriving from infected areas or who have transited through those areas, while some require a certificate to all travelers entering, including those in transit. That requirement goes beyond what is stated in the International Health Regulations, however, vaccination is strongly recommended for travel outside of urban areas in countries including in areas endemic for yellow fever.

As for malaria, for each country situated in endemic areas is recommended chemoprophylaxis specification, according to species and level of drug resistance parasites

Having an impressive physique is of high importance in the aesthetic-obsessed world of today. Once you start working out with free weights, it’s a good idea to find a workout partner; a ‘spot’ is required for some of the heavier lifts that are performed in a body building routine and without a spot, you can run the risk of serious injury. Another important aspect of the home gym that is often neglected is nutrition. While some people have no qualms about lifting all hours of the day, the benefits that they gain may be lessened due to an unhealthy diet. Bodybuilders should focus on a diet that is high in protein; meats such as chicken offer an abundance of this key compound, and you can supplement your protein consumption via workout shakes that are available for sale at any major health-food store.

Gym memberships can be expensive; by simply buying your own workout set-up, you can save a whole lot of money without even having to leave the house! A mirror is also a good idea for a workout room; the more that you see the progress you’ve made in the mirror, the further inspired you’ll be when it comes to getting even stronger.

The Secrets Of Amazing Energy Levels

There’s one thing that you just can’t do without if you want to live a full and successful life; energy. It costs nothing, is available to everyone, and the supply is unlimited. Yet so many people seem to lack the energy to bring to life the things they would really like to manifest into their lives.

I remember a saying I heard a few years ago which stuck in my mind:

• If you have talent and energy you’ll be a king
• If you have energy but no talent you’ll be a prince
• but if you have talent but no energy you’ll be a pauper

So many aspects of modern living seem to sap our natural energy that in order to stay feeling vibrant and truly alive we have to pay attention to certain critical areas.

Diet

It’s a well used saying but you are what you eat. The standard English or American diet is far from a healthy one. The biggest single user of our energy is digestion and something like a full English breakfast or traditional roast dinner can take up to nine hours to digest! No wonder so many people need to have a lie down afterwards!

The healthiest diet contains upwards of 50% of water based foods i.e. fresh fruit and vegetables. A large green salad with every meal and cutting out or at least down on caffeine, meat, dairy, sugar and snacks will make a huge difference.

I recently went through a month long intestinal cleanse and experienced significantly increased energy levels and felt amazing afterwards. If you eat a cooked diet you will have lots of horrible gunge (mucoid layers) in your intestines, which can hinder your digestion as well as being a long-term health risk. A cleanse will help you begin to eliminate these.

Exercise

A lack of exercise contributes to a lack of energy. To build health and energy you need to train aerobically because this is supplies your body with oxygen. Your lungs, heart, digestion, and elimination system will all work better when you are fit.

Research has shown that if you exercise on a regular basis for 12 months, you will do it for life. Put at least three exercise sessions per week into your schedule and stick to them.

Breathing

Our lungs are bigger at the bottom than the top and to get the right intake of oxygen we need to breathe from our diaphragm. Shallow ‘chest’ breathing is common and can lead to all sorts of complaints including a lack of energy.

Try power breathing 3 times a day. Inhale of the count of one, hold for the count of 4, and exhale for the count of 2. For example, if you inhaled for 4 seconds, then hold for 16 seconds and exhale for 8 seconds. Do this ten times.

A word of warning. This can make you go very dizzy because of the surge of oxygen to your brain so don’t do it if you’re driving (I’ve made that mistake!).

A balanced life

To rejuvenate and renew your energy reserves a balanced life is essential. When we work too much or too hard it reduces our energy and we achieve less. The most successful people I know actually take the most time off and lead very balanced lives.

Balance doesn’t seem to happen naturally for most people so it’s something we have to work at and pay attention to.

Emotions

Negative emotions drain us of energy and people who live mostly in states of worry, anxiety or, in fact, any form of fear will find it difficult to feel motivated or inspired about life.

On the other hand a life lived with a powerful sense of purpose, and with a happy, cheerful and optimistic outlook, will do amazing things for your energy levels.

These are just a few of the many things you can focus on to gain more energy. I expect most people could find ways to improve in one or more of these areas. Maximizing the Revenue Potential of Your Fitness Center

So often, hotel and resort managers view fitness centers and related services as solely “value-added” amenities, provided to reinforce a positive guest experience. Granted, this is without question, a valuable role. However, during difficult economic times such as the ones we are currently experiencing, it’s a perspective that ignores the wealth of profit-generating potential inherent in the fitness offering. Many hotels and resorts are failing to take advantage of this opportunity by not maximizing the revenue potential of their fitness centers.

I spend a great deal of time working with clients to illuminate the various revenue-generating strategies that can be brought to bear with any fitness center, whether they be through retail offerings, training programs or other unique platforms. That being said, I think it’s valuable to break some of these down and demonstrate just how a fitness center can go beyond merely pumping up your guests, and pump up your bottom line:

Fitness Retail

One of the opportunistic attributes about a focus in health & fitness is that it carries a unique and built-in merchandise demand. From workout apparel to bottled water, to headphones and yoga mats. A moderate inventory investment in fitness related supplies and accessories can be turned into easy sales and high-margin revenue.

It’s not uncommon to have fitness-minded guests who forget to pack workout clothes, headphones for their iPods, or their favorite workout accessories (i.e., yoga mat, water bottle, etc.). Others may prefer to gain a workout within the privacy and peace of their own room or suite. This is more common than one might think with the growing popularity of yoga, mat and resistance-band based exercise modalities. The increase in female business travelers has also added to this trend as they prefer the privacy of their rooms over a public facility. An in-room fitness workout is often a quick, safe, and potentially less intimidating way to stay fit while on the road for many travelers.

With the increase in entertainment-based fitness equipment featuring viewing screens or digital music technology; rentable headsets, I-pods and other electronic devices or accessories can provide an additional revenue source. Finally, every fitness environment also carries a sustainable demand for healthy refreshments and snacks.

Personal & Group Training Programs

When traveling on vacation, guests are typically looking for and willing to pay for, something more than they experience day-to-day at home. Better restaurants, better activities and thrills, better clothes and toys. This impulsive mindset is often applicable to the fitness-oriented traveler. Customized personal training and group exercise services are an excellent way to enable your guests to ‘pamper’ themselves while within your resort hotel environment or full-service property.

Establishing such programs within your facility can generate considerable revenue through your fitness center. Obviously this carries a need for qualified trainers, but that doesn’t mean you have to hire a full time training staff. There are independent training companies in every market that can provide ample qualified training staff to accommodate the needs of your fitness center’s unique programs, whether for personal or group training. For a larger facility or those attached to spa offerings, several companies provide a 3rd party managed solution that often can be supported with as little as a shared revenue agreement.

Personal training is always attractive for those guests who want individual attention they may not pay for at home. It’s the idea of being “pampered,” even when they’re breaking a sweat. Another aspect common to vacation travel is the preponderance of group activities. Whether its scenic tour groups, group fishing or diving exhibitions, group arts and crafts, travelers come prepared to engage in such group activities. A fitness center can capitalize on this with its own group exercise programming. Many facilities are seeing wonderful returns for group training in the hottest fitness trends such as yoga, outdoor “boot-camps”, and other mixed fitness or fusion classes.

Specialized Equipment and Services

In addition to the consideration for establishing a retail component as well as managed fitness programs, there exist a handful of specialized services that can command incremental revenue. One example would be the emergence of high-tech products. A current example is the rapid growth in popularity of vibration training products. Vibration training products like those from brands such as Power Plate, Vibraflex, Itonic or others in this rapidly-emerging new category offer the ability to train the entire body in a fraction of the time as conventional methods. Furthermore, they represent arguably the most low-impact, yet effective form of training. This opens the door to travelers who don’t want to devote much time to exercise, elderly travelers for whom higher impact training isn’t an option, and die-hard fitness enthusiasts who want to try the latest innovations in high-tech fitness equipment. Fitness centers and Spas can incorporate the use of such high-tech devices with the supervision of a trainer or certified clinician and the investment in such equipment. However, the economic returns can be substantial with the proper program promotion and revenue model. Additionally, there are other services like body-fat analysis, heart-rate monitoring and diet/nutrition analysis that can be valuable for those travelers who use their vacations as a benchmark to kick off new commitments to better health and more-active lifestyles.

Management

Spa directors that oversee a facility’s fitness services or fitness center managers likely have enough on their hands to keep them thoroughly busy. So a legitimate question may be, “how can my property implement and manage all of this effectively?” A relationship with a service provider such as WTS International and Aquila, LTD enables hotel and resort properties to outsource this function while sharing in the revenue generated by the incremental services. Companies such as these have the expertise to implement and manage the full spectrum of revenue-generating services both domestically and abroad. This means they can manage everything, including maintaining adequate merchandise inventory, developing and managing personal and group training, maintaining and servicing equipment, and just about any other aspect of your fitness center.

A successful fitness center is a living and evolving environment that, if properly managed, can help impact your business in both guest satisfaction and profitability. Typically, hotels and resorts that successfully leverage fitness to support their core hospitality business see a fitness center as more than a one-time, stagnant installation. Contemporary standards of safety and hygiene, guest’s ever-changing expectations in terms of amenities and unique services, and keeping up with state-of-the-art fitness modalities and technologies, all play a vital role in terms of your business focus regarding fitness. Considering the work and effort that goes into creating and maintain a successful fitness center, it makes sense to ensure that the revenue and profit potential of your facility is maximized. To be your best always learn from the best. Now after getting that off my chest, without further adieu here are the Top 5 weight loss Tips as promised.

1. Never go on a diet! When you hear a body builder of fitness competitor say ” I’m on my diet” they’re not using the word the same way you are. The ones who are successful at their sport eat very clean year round. They almost never eat any junk at all. Then when they are “on their diet” they make a few simple weight loss adjustments and the fat begins to melt off. You see, a diet is something you go “on” and get “off” of. This won’t create long term success and it usually only leads to failure. Instead, focus on eating clean all year long. Then use only little tiny, painless adjustments to keep making progress month by month.

2. Yes at the close of the 1st tip I said “month by month”. And guess what, I meant every word. Chances are you didn’t put on the extra weight you now want to lose in 30 days or less, am I right? So why would you expect that you could safely take it off in just 30 days despite what all diet pill pushers say. Think of it this way, if it took you 5 or 10 years to put it on, it may take 6 months or a year to safely take it off again.

3. You must eat more not less. The meaning of this is that you must consume more volume, but fewer calories overall. The simplest way to do this is each time you eat make 1/2 of your meal vegetables. So, if you look at your plate 50% are vegetables. 30% of what you see is a high quality protein source such as chicken, fish or beef. Then the remaining 20% is complex carbohydrates like brown rice or yams not pasta and bread.

4. You need to eat all the time. This is to say that you need to eat a minimum of 5 or 6 small meals per day. This will help satisfy your hunger, control insulin and supply your body with a constant steady flow of nutrients.

5. Follow the hydration equation. You absolutely need to drink enough water to stay properly hydrated and flush out all the bad toxins you need to get rid of each day. Personally I drink a gallon a day. But the one easy rule is; your body just told you that your dehydrated if and when you ever get thirsty. The trick is to continually sip water all day and never actually become thirsty.

One extra bonus tip. If you happen to get a flat tire while heading down the highway, please don’t get out of the car and just shoot the other 3 tires. In other words, if you’re doing really well with your weight loss plan and have a piece of cake at a birthday party don’t throw up your hands and say the heck with it and go eat 2 pints of ice cream. Admit you splurged, even enjoy the fact that you splurged, but for Heaven’s sake get back in the car and get back on the road to success.

Evra urges Ribery to join United

Manchester United star Patrice Evra has urged Bayern Munich ace Franck Ribery to join him at Old Trafford.

Evra believes his France team-mate would be an ideal signing if Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo leaves the club this summer.

He said: “Many say Cristiano will leave but only he knows the answer. It’s clear a guy like Franck would be the ideal solution for United if Cristiano left.

“Of course I talk to Franck about it, I tell him you had better come here.”

Manchester United were reported to have offered Bayern Munich £63million for the Frenchman just a few weeks ago.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are also among the clubs interested in signing Ribery.

Are You Asking The Right Questions About Your Diet?

Most of us have some questions when we realize our lifelong eating habits have to change. We’re bombarded with weight loss tips and secrets, new ways to finally take off the weight, breakthrough techniques and new and improved supplements, nutritional guides, replacement meals and diet plans. How is the average person supposed to wade through all the conflicting information and figure out the truth? How can we even hope to find the answers, when we aren’t even sure we’re asking the right questions? Here’s a few of the right questions you need answers for in order to begin a successful new lifestyle with a healthy eating plan to bring you to YOUR ideal weight and keep you there.

1. There are a lot of diet pills advertised every place I look. Are they a good idea if I need to lose weight?

Absolutely not! Diet pills are not a healthy way to lose weight. In fact, they can be extremely dangerous. Trying to chemically alter your metabolism is like trying to repair your car’s engine with a petrol additive. It may help things appear to be functioning better, but it’s really just an illusion. Additives to your car’s engine won’t fix the broken parts; they will only mask the noises. If you have a lifter going bad, an oil additive will get rid of the ticking noise alerting you to the problem, but it won’t repair the metal car part that needs to be replaced. Adding diet pills to your daily diet isn’t going to change the way your body processes too many calories. It won’t magically make the pounds melt off or cause you to drop three sizes by the end of the week. Reducing your intake of food, increasing your output with exercise and taking some scientifically based natural supplements to help curb your appetite will be a far better route to travel in order to achieve your weight loss goals.

2. I know I should lose weight so I look and feel better, but isn’t it better to try to lose the weight as fast as possible so I reach my ideal weight quicker?

Actually, no – weight loss is one of those areas in life where faster isn’t necessarily better. If you are losing 1-2 pounds a week and continue moving steadily toward your goal, rather than trying to lose 10 pounds in 10 days, your body will adjust to the changes more naturally and you’ll be less likely to gain the weight back.

3. I don’t have a problem with how I look. Do I need to worry if I’m 20 pounds overweight?

Although having a healthy self-esteem is great, being overweight is about a lot more than just your looks. Carrying extra weight makes all your organs – especially your heart – work much harder and can lead to many health problems. You should strive to lose the extra weight for the sake of your heart, lungs and other organs, so they can function at their optimum capacity for as long as possible.

4. I don’t have any energy and feel tired all the time. Can this really be from my diet or is there something wrong with me?

This is a definite sign you may not be eating a nutritionally sound diet. While it could be a sign of other problems, being overweight and not eating a healthy diet will definitely leave you feeling tired.

5. Most of my body is thin – it’s just my stomach and waist area that is heavy. Does this mean my weight issues aren’t serious?

Extra weight concentrated around your belly area, is the most dangerous weight health-wise. This type of fat pads your vital organs and causes them to work much harder than they should. Fat around the middle, in other words being apple shaped, is the most serious type of extra weight you can carry as it is linked to something called Metabolic Syndrome which increases your chances of getting health problems including diabetes and heart disease.

Oil Prices Approach Historic High

It has been announced that British Petroleum had to shut down an Alaskan oil field providing 8% of US crude oil production. Oil prices on the world market immediately surged to within pennies of their all-time high. What’s really going on? For an answer I look back to former President Richard Nixon. Privately Nixon who was smart, and as shrewd a man as any President in history use to talk to his friends about if there is a dollar to be made somewhere, than somebody is making it.

It does seem strange that for two consecutive years, the large multinational oil companies have had greater earnings, and free cash flow than in any period in history. At the same time, giant British Petroleum is clueless that they have corroded pipes that are about to take down 8% of America’s oil production. There is a dis-connect here of massive proportions, and nobody is thinking about it.

We all know the airlines are suffering. When you are hemorrhaging money, and the revenue just isn’t coming in, it’s really tough for a company financially to maintain the maintenance programs that are vital to keep an airplane flying. This however is not the situation that British Petroleum or the other major multinationals find themselves in. The oil companies are PRINTING MONEY. They don’t call oil “BLACK GOLD” for nothing.

Why would any oil company choose to skimp on maintenance? Why would BP be this dumb in their managerial policies? They have allowed a massive, and important pipeline to experience corrosion to the point where it has to be shut down? Listen up, when airlines fly a 747 airplane; each and every plane has to have its oil changed every so many miles or hours. The engines have to taken off the plane, and rebuilt every so many miles or flight hours. This is why planes are far more reliable than cars. The airlines make sure that this maintenance gets done or the Federal Aviation Agency will shut them down, no questions asked.

The President of the United States tours the world in Air Force One, which is a glorified version of a 747. The President actually has two of these planes identical to one another.

The President’s planes are put on what’s called a “White Glove” maintenance program. What this means is that the manufacturer, in this case Boeing wants the oil changed, and the engines ripped down every so flight hours. There are also scores of other items that must be done as well. Whatever the schedule is for whatever procedure, White Glove maintenance means the schedule is chopped in half. If Boeing wants an engine ripped apart every 500 hours, for Air Force One it’s every 250 hours.

What’s British Petroleum’s excuse for not maintaining the pipeline in a period of unprecedented earnings power, and monstrous unrestricted FREE CASH FLOW? It’s certainly not stupidity. I have been involved with oil and oil stocks since 1978, and I am telling you that the people in the oil business are some of the smartest people on earth. Do you know how much oil a supertanker holds? These tankers can hold up to 2 million barrels (that’s barrels, not gallons) of oil. This is absolutely untrue. I have not met an oil man (including CEO’s of the majors) in the last ten years, who has expressed any interest whatsoever in creating a new refinery in this country. Big oil doesn’t want to create new refineries.

As far as our leadership in Washington DC is concerned, this country has not had an oil policy in 30 years, thank you very much. If anything, America’s policies on oil, have been dictated by oil lobbyists paid to do oil’s bidding. The oil companies are not responsible for the high price of oil. OPEC sets the price, and big oil just tacks on their piece, and oh what a piece.
